Enhancing the Quality of the Ciliwung River, PGN Engages Communities through the GerbangBiru Ciliwung Program

Jakarta, August 13, 2024 – Pertamina Gas Subholding, PT PGN Tbk, continues to strengthen its commitment to corporate social and environmental responsibility through innovative and sustainable CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programs. During the LIKE 2 Festival (Environment, Climate, Forestry, Renewable Energy), an event initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in preparation for the 29th UNFCCC COP in 2024, PGN introduced its latest initiative to support the conservation of the Ciliwung River through the GerbangBiru Ciliwung Program (Building a Clean, Beautiful, and Sustainable Ciliwung River Movement), in collaboration with the Sahabat Ciliwung Foundation.

The GerbangBiru Ciliwung Program aims to support the restoration and pollution control of the Ciliwung River. This program integrates infrastructure development with community empowerment to achieve sustainable socio-economic and environmental welfare.

“This initiative turns the Ciliwung River into a distinctive feature and a hub for environmental, social, economic, and educational learning,” said Fajriyah Usman, Corporate Secretary of PT PGN Tbk.

The main development area of the GerbangBiru Ciliwung Program is located in Pondok Cina and Kemiri Muka Villages, Beji District, Depok City, covering the area from SMPN 34 Depok to the Sahabat Ciliwung Boat Dock, with a total length of approximately 3.6 kilometers.

The program is built upon three main pillars:

  1. Clean Gate (Gerbang Si Bersih): This pillar focuses on centralized wastewater management through communal WWTPs, waste banks, and converting waste into biogas. The initiative aims to reduce water pollution in the Ciliwung River and preserve water quality for community reuse.

  2. Beautiful Gate (Gerbang Si Indah): This includes river-based reforestation, agriculture, and economic development (Blue Eco). PGN supports fish farming, agriculture, and educational facilities, which not only provide economic benefits but also instill the importance of preserving the Ciliwung River.

  3. Safe Gate (Gerbang Si Rahayu): This prioritizes the conservation of endemic fish species and river safety. In collaboration with BPBD/SAR, PGN trains task forces from local communities and supports extracurricular rafting activities at SMPN 34 Depok.

Fajriyah explained that the program is scheduled to run in three phases: development (2024), stabilization (2025), and independence (2026). PGN also plans to build an Early Warning System for flood disasters, as well as green open spaces equipped with public facilities such as jogging tracks, amphitheaters, and walking paths.

PGN is committed to achieving an optimal balance between economic growth, environmental conservation, and community welfare, creating sustainable long-term value for all stakeholders.

“Our hope is to establish strong collaboration among all parties, so the GerbangBiru Ciliwung Program becomes not just the responsibility of Pertamina, PGN, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, or specific groups, but a shared responsibility. Through synergy between the government, businesses, and communities, we hope this program supports environmental sustainability and positively impacts the economy,” concluded Fajriyah.
