PGN Launches HSSE Demo Room in Medan to Enhance Safety Culture in Natural Gas Operations

Medan – PT PGN Tbk, as the Subholding Gas of Pertamina, has inaugurated the Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) Demo Room at PGN's Medan office, located in Glugur, North Sumatra. The HSSE Demo Room is crucial in strengthening the internalization of HSSE culture in the workplace, particularly given that PGN manages natural gas operations, which carry high safety risks.

The HSSE Demo Room in Medan will serve as an induction facility for workers and partners regarding the 16 elements of the Corporate Life Saving Rules (CLSR). These rules include: Tools & Equipment Rules, Safe Zone Position, Permit to Work, Isolation Rules, Confined Space, Lifting Operation, Fit to Work, Working at Height, Personal Floating Device Rules, System Override Rules, Asset Integrity Rules, Excavation Rules, Gas Test Rules, Seat Belt Rules, and No Alcohol & Illegal Drugs Rules.

"The HSSE Demo Room is a platform for implementing Pertamina's CLSR to control risks and ensure that all upstream to downstream oil and gas operations within Pertamina Group can be carried out safely. Going forward, the implementation of HSSE at PGN as the Subholding Gas is expected to continue robustly. Optimal safety aspects will support the efficient utilization of natural gas, ensuring continuous energy supply for the people of Sumatra and surrounding areas," said Wiko Migantoro, Vice President Director of Pertamina, after the inauguration ceremony of the HSSE Demo Room Medan, (March 18, 2024).

"The presence of the HSSE Demo Room is expected to raise awareness of the importance of safety aspects in the workplace, especially in achieving zero fatality. Safety should always be remembered and adhered to by PGN and its partners. With the HSSE Demo Room, we can directly observe the tools for managing workplace safety, along with other safety guidelines, thus supporting PGN's main activities in managing natural gas distribution," said Arief Setiawan Handoko, President Director of PGN.

In addition to the 16 CLSR elements, the HSSE Demo Room Medan also showcases prototypes and types of work related to the construction of low to high-pressure natural gas pipelines, illustrations of pipeline excavation depths based on pressure levels, natural gas valves, and other supporting equipment for gas networks both offshore and onshore. This display is intended to enhance understanding and knowledge in managing risks in the natural gas business, particularly in high-risk jobs.

Previously, PGN had already established an HSSE Demo Room in Bandung. The Medan HSSE Demo Room will complement PGN's HSSE implementation efforts in managing natural gas utilization for customers in Sales and Operation Region 1 (SOR 1), which covers Sumatra and surrounding areas. In SOR 1, PGN currently serves 137,811 customers, including 136,603 households, 758 small customers, and 450 commercial/industrial customers, with a distribution volume of up to 124.77 BBTUD.

According to Arief, HSSE practices must be implemented from top management down to workers to ensure safe business operations across the board. "HSSE socialization and education have been followed by around 6,000 personnel, both internal and partners of Subholding Gas, and this must continue to be disseminated so that the safety culture remains ingrained when entering PGN Group’s operational areas. Additionally, potential hazards must be well understood to prevent incidents, ensuring effective HSSE implementation," said Arief.

PGN also hopes that the HSSE Demo Room will support the implementation of the Safety, Occupational Health, Security, and Environmental Management System (SMK3P2L-E). PGN has set policies and targets to be applied across all operational areas to ensure successful implementation of SMK3P2L-E, with the goal of minimizing workplace accidents and work-related diseases.
