PGN Workers’ Union Affirms Support for National Natural Gas Utilization Towards Energy Self-Sufficiency
Bandung, October 24, 2024— In addressing challenges and ensuring the sustainability of PGN’s business operations, the PGN Workers’ Union (SP PGN) held a National Working Meeting (Rakernas) 2024 featuring a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) aimed at strengthening synergy between workers and management. The goal was to safeguard PGN’s role and contributions to national energy services and its position in bolstering energy security amid increasingly complex business dynamics and challenges.
This forum served as a platform for stakeholders to exchange thoughts and ideas about the challenges and opportunities facing the national gas industry, particularly PGN. With a theme relevant to the company’s future, the event aimed to formulate strategic steps to ensure PGN’s business sustainability.
The Rakernas SP 2024 was attended by SP PGN board members and PGN management, including SP PGN Chairman Ardi Viryawan, as well as key PGN leaders such as Human Resources and Business Support Director Rachmat Hutama, Business Strategy and Development Director Rosa Permata Sari, and Independent Commissioner Tony Setyo Boedi Hoesodo.
A key topic discussed was PGN’s business transformation to face future challenges. "Moving forward, PGN must focus on human resource development, technological adaptation, and adhering to existing regulations to address natural gas business challenges," said Tony. Rachmat added that shifts in the business environment, particularly in supply dynamics, must be a focus for all PGN employees.
"Before long, management will enter a new phase involving the development of LNG infrastructure and LNG trading," Rachmat explained. Meanwhile, Rosa Permata Sari expressed PGN’s ambitious goals for the national gas industry. “Our main focus is to ensure PGN remains operational and contributes to the nation until 2045. Achieving this goal requires various transformations in both business and human resources,” Rosa stated.
In addition to business transformation, the forum addressed other strategic issues such as gas supply availability, infrastructure development, energy transformation, and human resource competency enhancement. Participants actively contributed ideas to overcome existing challenges.
PGN is committed to increasing its production and distribution capacity for natural gas. Strategic infrastructure projects in central and eastern Indonesia aim to strengthen national energy security and support the government’s efforts to achieve a better energy mix. As Pertamina’s Gas Subholding, PGN is dedicated to advancing Indonesia’s energy sector, particularly through natural gas utilization, in line with the Energy Self-Sufficiency program outlined in the government’s Asta Cita vision for 2024–2029 under the leadership of President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran.
PGN is also addressing supply-demand imbalances by securing domestic gas supplies, tapping into marginal wells, and sourcing LNG globally to ensure reliable natural gas availability for customers. These efforts aim to increase natural gas adoption and establish it as a preferred energy source during the energy transition. The company also prioritizes reducing its carbon footprint and pursuing green energy initiatives as long-term goals. Furthermore, PGN continues to explore collaboration opportunities with various government institutions to expedite infrastructure development and natural gas utilization in Indonesia.
The synergy between the workers’ union and management was a cornerstone of this forum’s success. Both parties agreed that solid cooperation is crucial for achieving shared goals, including PGN’s sustainability. Through mutual support and collaboration, PGN aims to grow and provide greater contributions to society and the nation.
Rosa emphasized the importance of collaboration between the workers’ union and management in realizing the company’s vision. “We hope discussions like this translate into actionable business initiatives. Productive input from the start will help shape policies that contribute to growth and can be effectively implemented,” she said.
Echoing this sentiment, SP PGN Chairman Ardi Viryawan assured that the union and management are committed to finding solutions to fulfill government mandates while maintaining PGN’s business growth and sustainability. Ardi expressed confidence that improved company performance would enhance employee welfare and PGN’s contributions to Indonesia.
Despite challenges, such as household gas networks (Jargas) and certain gas prices (HGBT), workers remain dedicated to contributing their best to ensure PGN’s business continuity. SP PGN prioritizes constructive dialogue with management to ensure that all initiatives, including gas infrastructure development, consider workers as the foundation of the company’s operations.
“We support PGN in fulfilling its duties as long as the risks remain manageable, given that PGN, as a business entity, must remain profitable and grow. Employee welfare should also be prioritized to maintain high morale and productivity in achieving targets. As a publicly listed company, PGN is also responsible for maintaining shareholder trust. We hope the government provides support, such as competitive gas and LNG supply allocations, to enable PGN to fulfill its role as a gas aggregator and development agent in achieving energy self-sufficiency,” Ardi concluded.
