PGTC 2024: PGN and Udayana University Explore Breakthroughs & Solutions for Green Energy During Energy Transition
Bali – PT PGN Tbk, as Pertamina's Subholding Gas, has partnered with Udayana University to enhance energy management capabilities and seek solutions and breakthroughs in energy. This collaboration between PGN and academia is part of the Pertamina Goes To Campus 2024 (PGTC 2024) initiative.
Mirza Mahendra, Director of Program Development at the Directorate General of Oil and Gas, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), explained that future challenges for renewable energy (EBT) include economic feasibility and aligning upstream and downstream regulations.
“We have been tasked by the President to achieve energy self-sufficiency. Dependence on imported energy undermines Indonesia’s economy, and it is our collective responsibility to manage energy effectively through diversification programs,” he said.
Mirza emphasized that the key to achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 lies in energy transition, with natural gas playing a crucial role as the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel. “That’s why PGN delivers energy that is better for the environment,” he added.
From a resource perspective, gas reserves are sufficient for the foreseeable future, but challenges remain, particularly in building infrastructure to deliver gas to the public and support NZE 2060.
“Energy management for PGN’s future requires collaboration with academia to develop innovative research. Our partnership with Udayana University aims to prepare highly skilled human resources for future energy management. This collaboration also serves to strengthen corporate engagement with the next generation of national energy managers,” said PGN President Director Arief Setiawan Handoko.
“Collaboration in various aspects, especially in renewable energy research, reflects a shared commitment to reducing carbon footprints and achieving a better planet. Udayana University, as part of the academic community, is committed to partnering with PGN to foster education, awareness, and discourse on energy transition. This synergy will ensure a smooth transition,” said Udayana University Rector Prof. I Ketut Sudarsana.
Both PGN and Udayana University agreed that natural gas, as a transitional energy source, can drive significant change and pave the way for renewable energy in the future. This partnership is also expected to raise awareness among the younger generation about energy issues and prepare them for the workforce in the digital era.
“May this collaboration mark the beginning of a brighter energy future for all of us,” added Prof. I Ketut Sudarsana.
Arief expressed hope that PGN and Udayana University could foster constructive cooperation to support PGN’s efforts in expanding the use of natural gas. Additionally, this partnership aims to promote natural gas utilization among youth, particularly Udayana University students. In Bali, PGN is introducing its beyond pipeline gas products, such as CNG and LNG, given the lack of pipeline infrastructure and gas resources on the island.
“In preparing for solutions to transition towards renewable energy, one area of collaboration could be hydrogen energy. PGN is also moving in that direction as part of its step-out strategy or initiative in low-carbon business to support Net Zero Emission 2060,” Arief concluded.
