PGN and MRT Collaborate to Develop Natural Gas Network in MRT DKI Jakarta’s Transit-Oriented Development Area
Jakarta – PT PGN Tbk, part of Pertamina's Subholding Gas, has partnered with PT MRT Jakarta for the expansion of the city’s natural gas network along the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) areas of the MRT DKI Jakarta route. This collaboration between state-owned enterprises (BUMN and BUMD) aims to unlock new business opportunities and strengthen customer loyalty programs for both MRT and PGN.
As the first step in this partnership, PGN and MRT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for natural gas business cooperation along MRT Jakarta's TOD areas on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, in Jakarta. The MoU was signed by PGN's Director of Strategy and Business Development, Rosa Permata Sari, and PT MRT Jakarta’s Director of Business Development, Farchad Mahfud.
“We are excited to welcome this collaboration, as it enables the use of natural gas alongside MRT's transit areas. This partnership could integrate gas services for residential and commercial needs along MRT Jakarta’s route,” said Rosa Permata Sari, PGN's Director of Strategy and Business Development.
Farchad Mahfud, Director of Business Development at PT MRT Jakarta, emphasized that the partnership bridges spatial planning and energy sectors. MRT Jakarta has three key mandates: building transport routes, operating and maintaining them, and developing businesses, including transit-oriented developments around stations like Lebak Bulus, Fatmawati, Dukuh Atas, and eventually Kota Tua.
In these TOD areas, MRT Jakarta aims to optimize both public and private land while developing public infrastructure that is expected to become self-funding. “The key to self-funding is commercialization. Commercialization requires energy, such as electricity, gas, and internet. This partnership is crucial to ensuring that natural gas is available for future TOD developments,” Farchad added.
The collaboration between PGN and MRT is a win-win initiative to introduce and expand PGN’s ecosystem in providing clean energy to MRT. PGN sees significant business potential and complementary strengths in this cooperation.
The expansion of the natural gas network is part of efforts to increase the use of domestic and environmentally friendly energy to reach the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target. Moreover, it can reduce the subsidy burden on imported energy, with collaboration among various parties being key to the efficient use of natural gas in Indonesia.
“Strategic partnerships with MRT complement PGN’s mission to actively contribute to the development of natural gas utilization during the energy transition. We believe the role of natural gas will remain significant through 2050. Together with MRT, we will have the opportunity to build a sustainable Jakarta using environmentally friendly energy. In addition, PGN has a broad business line, and we hope to expand this collaboration,” concluded Rosa.
