Ahead of the 79th Independence Day Ceremony in IKN, PGN Ensures Natural Gas Flowing to IKN

Ahead of the 79th commemoration of Indonesia's Independence Day on August 17 at the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN), as the Subholding Gas of Pertamina, ensures that natural gas has been supplied and is ready for use. PGN is providing natural gas to IKN using a combination of services with beyond-pipeline modes, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

At this stage, CNG is transported using cylinder-based containers, known as Gaslink Cylinders. There are two types of Gaslink Cylinders provided in IKN: a 24 m³ capacity cylinder and a 4 m³ capacity mini Gaslink Cylinder.

As of Sunday, August 11, 2024, the ministerial residence (RTJM) 105 has been equipped with Gaslink Cylinders, and the first gas flow has been gradually supplied. A total of 12 Gaslink Cylinders have been installed at RTJM, spread across 8 plots. In addition to RTJM, Gaslink Cylinders have also been installed at the state palace, Garuda Palace, the Presidential Secretariat Office, ASN 4 Tower B and C, ASN 1 Tower B and C, BIN apartments, POLRI apartments, the Presidential Guard Tower, Beranda Nusantara, and Hotel Nusantara (private commercial customers). In total, 34 Gaslink Cylinders have been installed and are ready to serve the natural gas needs in IKN.

To support the natural gas distribution in IKN, PGN is also constructing a 61.1 km pipeline in the Core Government Center (KIPP) Sub WP 1A area. Currently, gas supplies are being transported from Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, through intermodal natural gas transportation.

The provision of natural gas to IKN represents PGN’s commitment as the implementing agent of Pertamina's government mandate to provide natural gas infrastructure. This also reflects PGN's support for the government’s plan to build a green industrial area in IKN. With lower emissions compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas can be the primary choice for clean energy.

"PGN is committed to carrying out the government’s mandate to provide clean energy in IKN. Currently, PGN is making optimal efforts to ensure the safe operation of natural gas services to support the readiness of infrastructure for the Independence Day ceremony in IKN," said PGN’s Corporate Secretary Fajriyah Usman on August 12, 2024.

Fajriyah continued, stating that PGN continues to strive to ensure the natural gas infrastructure development in IKN progresses according to target. PGN is also preparing the gas network in IKN to meet the projected demand for 9,996 Household Connections (SR).

PGN is consistently collaborating with the IKN Authority and other stakeholders to ensure that the natural gas provision in IKN will bring positive benefits and align with Indonesia's goal of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Equally important, natural gas consumers will receive practical, reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly energy services.

"During the energy transition, natural gas is considered a cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy source because its CO2 emissions are lower compared to other fossil fuels. Additionally, natural gas is domestically sourced, which helps save foreign exchange for energy imports," concluded Fajriyah.
